NEW YORK CITY, Tuesday, January 29, 2013 – DRY ICE Tools, indoor ice and mixed climbing training tools for use in climbing facilities worldwide, are now available for purchase!
DRY ICE Tools offer a new and most importantly, safe way for climbers to train indoors for Ice and Mixed Climbing.
DRY ICE Tools feature a stiff rubber strap attached to a handle fashioned in the likeness of an ice axe. Climbers use them as if they were dry tooling by simply placing the rubber loop of the tool over the in-situ holds of the climbing facility. The degree that a hold is ‘positive’ (as in, how well the strap hooks over the hold) and the specific direction that the hold must be used in order for the strap to engage, accurately imitate the muscular motions and particular idiosyncrasies of ice / mixed climbing. In fact, the specific climbing motion of DRY ICE works far more muscle groups of the body than one expects, increasing the positive results. The advantages of this design are clear; there are no sharp edges, there is no need for special ice imitating holds, and there is no costly damage to the climbing wall as when real steel picks are used indoors.

“Staring up at 110 feet of frozen vertical candles, thoughts drowning in doubt and fear… This is what we came here for. This was why I left New Hampshire to come to the Catskills. The Advocate is in as good shape as one really could hope for after only a week of cold, but it’s been a brutal, bitter, cold, and I wonder if each swing, or each kick, or the weighting of a tool will blow out the delicate formation above.”
These are our one-of-a-kind World Class adaptive ice climbing clinics in Ouray, CO and North Conway, NH. We provide all ability levels of instruction to all types of mobility limitations. This is one of the best and most fun Ice Climbing events of the year!
Join us as we face the walls of vertical ice, learning about the specialized equipment and techniques needed climb vertical waterfalls. Men and women who are missing limbs or eyes or the use of their legs will gather to challenge themselves physically and mentally and, especially to challenge the common perception that an amputee is handicapped or that a blind person must, by default, lead a second-rate life. Malcolm Daly, one of the Founders and an amputee, puts it succinctly: “Ice is the great equalizer. None of us can climb it without adaptive equipment. We just go one step further.”

We were having problems with the cold (single digits) at the Smuggs Ice Bash. We think it is the radio so I got an insulated carry case that we can put hand warmers in…Let’s hope this works.

A middle-aged woman, climbing ice solo, in the middle of nowhere… WHAT?!
Gone North is a documentary about just such an occurrence, and a lot more. Why would a nice city girl from good family want to freeze her backside sleeping in a tent, without a shower, eating ramen noodles for 5 weeks? What is so compelling about remote wilderness? Why do we seek solitude? Why does climbing ice make more sense than climbing career ladders? I don’t quite know the answers to these questions, but I will film my journey as I try to make sense of some of them in the Arctic Norway.
