Description: Buy it at the Mountaineer.

A technical axe for ice and mixed route climbing with a high level of difficulty.

Trapezoidal shaped hammer to facilitate jamming in rock fissures.

Placement made easy due to excellent clearance (ice formations and mantles).

Good swinging performance, even with a straight arm:
*minimum mass around the rotation point (handle), maximum around the head of the axe
*small sized spike helps prevent snagging whilst swinging.

Placement efficiency:
*forged pick, thinner at the tip, to prevent ice shattering
*steep angled first tooth for thin ice and small edges
*good stability whilst placing and hooking due to the teeth distribution.

Easy removal even with deep placements due to the bevelled teeth.

Technical specifications:
Comes with Clipper leash
Comes with Cascade pick
Weight: 1 lb 8 oz

Pros:
Cons: The wrist cuff on the leash is bulky

Using the Quark kinda feels like cheating somehow! It's super efficient in placments and cleaning, very well balanced, and the grip fits a wide range of hand sizes.

Pros: over the top reach, light touch, good hooking
Cons: everyone seems to have one!

A joy to swing. Very little force needed to get a good pick. Reaches over the top of bulges very well. The teeth at the base come in handy on steep ice when you choke up on the shaft (both the pick and the teeth on the base engage on the ice)

Pros:
Cons:

I used Cobra's last year and they worked very well for me. However, I was talked into a set of Quarks this fall and what a pleasure they are to climb with. Pick placements require a lot less effort and force. The grip rest is great for those with a tendancy of sandwhiching the pinky. Wouldn't dream of going back to the Cobra's.

Pros: security, balance, versatility
Cons: none

I attribute my sucess at leading Grade 4 my 1st season on ice to these tools! I've swung some friends tools and am amazed how the Quarks feel when I get back on them. I have slightly smaller than average hands and I think the handle on this tool fits me perfect. I don't see me getting rid of these for a decade!

one swing, one stick. how can you argue with that? the new ones have the pinky guard; should save on some swollen digits.

Pros: great swing, great sticks
Cons: I love them too much to drytool with 'em

I tried 8 tools before I bought, and these were head and shoulders the best. YMMV of course, but there IS a reason you see so many of these out there. They stick like crazy, remove effortlessly, and are FOR ME the perfect balance of weight and "heft". I've used lots of tools since I bought these, and they are still my favorites. The orange squeezy leash attachment thingie never worked smoothly for me though, and I've gone to an Android leash. The cuff isn't as comfy but the action is 100% better.
