Shadow

Description: Buy it at the Mountaineer.

The Shadow is a technical, modular pack designed for mountaineering, light alpine and ice ascents. Durable and extremely light, the Shadow has a slim profile that keeps the pack from interfering with your arms as you climb. It can quickly convert into a stripped-down summit pack by removing the Y-rod and bivy pad. The Shadow’s large capacity swallows up stacks of gear and its ergonomic Y-rod suspension system allows for great support and comfort. Constructed with 210d SilNylon, the Shadow is light yet tough for winter’s harsh conditions. Hypalon® daisy chains, ice axe and crampon holders, ice clipper slots and waterproof zippers are just some of the key features you’ll find on this excellent alpinist pack.

Pros: light, durable, slim profile
Cons: few pocket/strap options, buckles

This pack served me great while I had it but I did end up upgrading to something a bit bigger (check out Cilo packs). It is very light and durable and climbs well due to its narrow profile. Unfortunately it is a bit of a pain to pack because of how narrow it is. The expendable sleeve does work well and I've even taken this on 3 day solo trips but it's not ideal for that. The crampon attachment is hard to trust - I much prefer a pouch but that may be a personal preference. What annoyed me and made me eventually switch packs however, were the small buckles on this pack - a pain to use in winter with gloves on. I do think now you can now find these packs for under a 100 and it is a great pack for quick trips to the ice.
