Location: Mt.
Pisgah, Lake Willoughby, VT
Grade:
WI 5+
Height:
350'
Directions: From
the south, take exit 23 off I-91, route 5 north through Lyndonville, to West
Burke and a right turn onto 5A north which passes beneath the west face
of Mt. Pisgah, along the eastern shore of the Lake. >From the north,
take exit 28 off I-91 for Derby Center or exit 26 at Orleans. Either
way, head east to join 5A south to reach the Lake.
Season: As
with all big routes at the Lake, the Promenade requires a considerably
prolonged cold spell in order to form completely. It is usually
climbable in some manner for most of the three months of winter.
Route Description:
The route lies to the immediate right of Last Gentleman at the southern
end of the Gentleman ampitheater on the west face of Mt. Pisgah. P1(WI
5+, 180'), ascends the near-vertical ice wall, then continues up the
free-standing (or hanging) column to a belay on screws at its top. P2
(WI 5+, 170') continues up more moderate ice to the final column which may
come directly out of the prow (hardest), or form off to the right (with a
vague rock ledge traverse right), or mixed through the rock up and left. Considering
the approach slab, and division of pitches, the route may be done in as many
as five pitches.
Gear: Full
column ice rack is needed for the ice belays. Bring an alpine rock
rack for the free-standing column on the first pitch and the mixed finish if
the route is thin.
Descent:
Rappel the route off threads, or hike around the south end of the Tablets on
the trail.
