Location: Huntington Ravine, Pinkham Notch, Mt.
Washington, NH
Grade: WI2/3
Height: 500'
Description: THE classic early season ice route in
the Northeast USA. Hike into the ravine up the Southern rim along
edge of the Fan talus slope heading straight up toward
Central Gully. Pinnacle Gully is hidden by Pinnacle Buttress
throughout the approach. Climb the gorgeous gully of decreasing
steepness past fixed belays in the gully's overhanging left wall.
Gear: A modest alpine rock rack; a thin ice rack.
Descent: Downclimb Central Gully if returning to
the base of Huntington Ravine; or, hike around along the upper rim of the
cirque to the Southeast to the well-marked Lion's Head Trail. Under no
circumstances is the Escape Hatch recommended before there is substantial
snowpack, it's a bushwhack that should be avoided..
